It’s A Good Day When You Find $30M Worth Of Rare Art In The Attic

It’s always nice if you can afford to buy say, a nice little cottage on Long Island, a getaway to escape reality and just enjoy the peace and quiet. One man spent $300,000 to buy just such a bungalow out in Bellport, N.Y. and found his reward for doing so would be more than some R&R — it’d be about $30 million worth of art.

Back in 2007, the home’s new owner discovered quite a cache of art in the garage and attic of the bungalow, reports News 12 Long Island. The works are all by obscure Armenian-American abstract impressionist  Arthur Pinajian and include thousands of paintings, drawings and journals.

Apparently when Pinajian died, he left instructions for the entire collection to be dumped in the Brookhaven landfill, but his family never did so. Maybe they just got busy or perhaps they forgot, resulting in this extreme and literal case of “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.”

The man who bought the house also purchased that art for $2,500 and set about restoring, framing and cataloguing it. It’s been valued at $30 million, and some pieces have already been sold for prices as high as $500,000. While many of the works are stored in the cottage owner’s gallery in Bellport, 50 of Pinajian’s works are on exhibit now at Manhattan’s Fuller Building.

As always with these “Surprise! You’re rich!” stories, I’m going to take one last look around in the basements and attics of family members. Because goodness knows there’s nothing hiding in my storage-bereft apartment.

Ambrose Akinmusire: As if the weather weren’t enough for Angelenos to gloat about, jazz fans got yet another reason when this trumpeter returned to his West Coast roots as an instructor at USC’s Thornton School of Music. That means more opportunities to catch a unique, restless talent, including this residency, which should hint toward his next moves following his acclaimed Blue Note debut, “When the Heart Emerges Glistening.” The Blue Whale, March 15-17. www.bluewhalemusic.com.

Chick Corea: Whether leading the various incarnations of fusion innovators Return to Forever or continuing to explore duets with Gary Burton, this jazz piano great has hardly slowed down. This run of shows finds Corea exploring the trio form backed by Return to Forever bassist Stanley Clarke and Clarke’s longtime drummer, Ronald Bruner Jr. Catalina Jazz Club, April 9-14. www.catalinajazzclub.com.

The giant social network plans to unveil the redesign at a press conference Thursday at its Menlo Park, Calif., headquarters.
The redesign will reportedly give users new ways to catch up with what friends are doing, such as sorting through photos they share or music they are listening to. Right now users can only sort the News Feed by “Top Stories” or “Most Recent.” The changes address a frequent complaint from users that they have too little control over what appears in their News Feed.

This year’s Oscars feature the youngest and oldest lead actress nominees ever — Quvenzhané Wallis, 9, and Emmanuelle Riva, who turns 86 on Oscar day. Wallis is a Bayou girl from Houma, La., who likes to play outdoors with her two dogs and ride her skateboard. Riva lives in Paris and has been acting for 55 years. Riva had been primarily out of the movie business since the mid-1980s until Austrian director Michael Haneke lured her back to work with his script for “Amour” and the opportunity to play Anne, a woman nearing life’s end. Wallis was plucked from a casting call of thousands for “Beasts of the Southern Wild” and chosen to lead Benh Zeitlin’s cast of nonactors in her role as Hushpuppy, a little survivalist with an oversized spirit.

Lady Gaga needs hip surgery, cancels rest of ‘Born This Way’ tour

Lady Gaga needs surgery after suffering from a concert injury, which has led to the cancellation of her “Born This Way Ball” tour. The singer, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, was experiencing chronic pain that caused the cancellation of four tour shows earlier this week. “After additional tests this morning to review the severity of the issue, it has been determined that Lady Gaga has a labral tear of the right hip,” a Live Nation post on LittleMonsters.com announced Wednesday. “She will need surgery to repair the problem, followed by strict down time to recover. This unfortunately, will force her to cancel the tour, so she can heal.”

This sculpture is made entirely of wax by Artist, Sam Jinks.
Sam Jinks was born in Australia in 1973 and currently lives and works in Melbourne as a sculptor.

NEW YORK.- Stephen Haller Gallery presents The Geometry of Longing, a group exhibition exploring the connection between geometric symbols and abstract art; and introducing the work of renowned sculptor Bruno Romeda to the gallery. The Geometry of Longing gives examples of artists use of mathematical symbols simple geometric shapes to capture the emotional content of what we perceive – artists whose geometric forms are not simply rote precision, but intensely human expression.
